Infineon launches CIRRENT™ Cloud ID service to simplify the authentication of secure IoT devices to the cloud

Posted on: 11/22/2021

Infineon Technologies Co., Ltd. recently launched the CIRRENT™ Cloud ID service, which realizes the automation of cloud certificate configuration and identity verification from IoT devices to the cloud. This easy-to-use service can extend the chain of trust, making chip-to-cloud tasks more convenient and safer, and at the same time reducing the overall cost of the enterprise. Cloud ID is an ideal choice for cloud-connected product companies in the industrial, consumer, healthcare, medical, and manufacturing industries.

Rob Conant, Vice President of Infineon’s Software and Ecosystem Division, said: “For many years, IoT product manufacturers have been committed to simplifying the manufacturing, security and configuration processes. Cloud ID is based on Infineon’s strong capabilities in embedded security, combined with CIRRENT The cloud service extends the chain of trust from the chip to the cloud, and solves the problems of manufacturing, security and configuration in a unique way. On the premise of ensuring security, it helps customers save costs, time and manpower.”

In the past, IoT device manufacturers often had to make a trade-off between IT complexity and security. Complex and expensive solutions require the establishment of a hardware security module (HSM) on the production line and require secure IT procedures; simple solutions are easier to implement and cost less, but there are a lot of security risks. Infineon’s Cloud ID uses a cloud-based certificate delivery mechanism to ensure encryption security while simplifying the manufacturing process to break the aforementioned model.

Compared with traditional methods, Cloud ID has many advantages. include:

● Simplify the manufacturing process, and at the same time have the ability to have individual certificates, without the need for complex IT systems and procedures

● Use an asymmetric secret key to ensure its security. This feature is based on Infineon’s trusted security and its advantages of configuring X.509 certificates without complex infrastructure

● With the function of automatic configuration to the cloud.Users can set up cloud-to-cloud connections, and can use private cloud, public cloud or AWS IoT Core for configuration

● Give users the ability to monitor, track, and review registration and configuration

● Reduce overall costs by saving NRE fees and HSM operating costs.

How Cloud ID works

Cloud ID can be set up quickly and easily. Users can register for a CIRRENT account for free and set up a cloud-to-cloud connection between the CIRRENT Cloud ID service and its product cloud. A batch of chips compatible with Cloud ID and containing X.509 certificates are sent to the production site and registered by the technicians there through smartphones. The X.509 certificate is automatically configured to the product cloud. Users can log in to the CIRRENT console, download certificates, review and track registration and configuration.
