ROHM launches small surface mount package AC/DC converter IC “BM2SC12xFP2-LBZ” with built-in 1700V SiC MOSFET

The world-renowned semiconductor manufacturer Rohm (headquartered in Kyoto, Japan) has developed a built-in 1700V withstand voltage SiC MOSFET for high-power general-purpose inverters, AC servos, commercial air conditioners, street lamps and other industrial equipment*1AC/DC converter*2IC “BM2SC12xFP2-LBZ”.

In recent years, with the improvement of energy conservation awareness, in the field of AC 400V industrial equipment, the application of SiC power semiconductors that can support higher voltage, more energy saving, and smaller size has become wider and wider. On the other hand, in industrial equipment, in addition to the main power supply Circuit, there is also built-in auxiliary power supply that provides power supply voltage for various control systems. However, due to design cycle considerations, they are still widely used with low withstand voltage The Si-MOSFET and the lossy IGBT, so there is a big problem in energy saving.

In response to these challenges, ROHM began to develop plug-in AC/DC converter ICs with built-in high withstand voltage and low loss SiC MOSFETs in 2019, and has been committed to developing ICs that can maximize the performance of SiC power semiconductors. In an advanced position in the industry.

This time, the new product has a built-in SiC MOSFET with excellent energy-saving performance and an auxiliary power supply designed for industrial equipment*3The optimized control circuit and the use of a small surface mount package (TO263) help make the development of energy-saving AC/DC converters easier. New products can be automatically mounted on the circuit board using equipment, which was impossible in the past; and when used for auxiliary power supplies of AC 400V and output below 48W, the number of components is significantly reduced compared with the configuration of ordinary products. (The heat sink and 12 components are reduced to one). This not only reduces the risk of component failure, but also improves power conversion efficiency by up to 5% through SiC MOSFETs. Therefore, it not only helps to significantly reduce the installation cost of the factory, but also provides solutions that are smaller, more reliable, and more energy-efficient.

Samples of this new product have been sold in May 2021 (sample price is 1,500 yen/piece, excluding tax), and it is planned to temporarily put into mass production at a monthly production scale of 100,000 starting from October 2021. In addition, the new product and its evaluation board “BM2SC123FP2-EVK-001” have begun to be sold through e-commerce, and can be purchased from e-commerce platforms such as Ameya360 and Oneyac.

“BM2SC12xFP2-LBZ” integrates a 1700V withstand voltage SiC MOSFET and an SiC MOSFET drive gate drive circuit optimized for auxiliary power supply of industrial equipment in one package. 1.Can support up to 48W output power of surface mount packaged products, which helps to greatly reduce the installation cost of the factory

The new product adopts the surface mount package “TO263-7L” specially developed for built-in SiC MOSFET. Despite its small size, it can still fully ensure the packaging safety (creepage distance) when handling high power, and as a surface mount package product without a heat sink, it can support up to 48W (24V, 2A, etc.) output power. Automatic equipment can be used to mount this product on the circuit board, which was not possible with previous products in this range. Coupled with the advantage of reducing the number of components, it will help greatly reduce the installation cost of the factory.

2.The heat sink and up to 12 parts are reduced to one, which has an overwhelming advantage in miniaturization

The new product adopts an integrated package. Compared with the ordinary discrete product configuration using Si-MOSFET, the number of components is significantly reduced. There are as many as 12 components in one package (AC/DC converter control IC, 800V withstand voltage Si-MOSFET× 2. Zener diode × 3, resistor × 6) and heat sink. In addition, because SiC MOSFET has the characteristics of high withstand voltage and excellent noise resistance, it can also realize the miniaturization of noise reduction components.

3.Reduce development cycle and risks, built-in protection functions, and significantly improve reliability

The new product adopts an integrated package, which can reduce the man-hours for component selection and reliability evaluation of the clamping circuit and the driving circuit, reduce the risk of component failure, and shorten the development cycle when the SiC MOSFET is introduced. In addition, in addition to achieving high-precision thermal shutdown (Thermal Shutdown) through the built-in SiC MOSFET, it is also equipped with overload protection (FB OLP), power supply voltage pin overvoltage protection (VCC OVP), overcurrent protection, and secondary The rich protection functions required by the power supply of industrial equipment for continuous driving, such as the overvoltage protection of the side voltage, realizes higher reliability.

4.Exciting the performance of SiC MOSFET, the energy saving effect is remarkable

The gate drive circuit for driving the SiC MOSFET in the new product maximizes the power of the SiC MOSFET, and the power conversion efficiency is increased by up to 5% compared with the conventional configuration using Si-MOSFET (as of June 2021 ROHM survey data). In addition, the control circuit of this product adopts a quasi-resonant mode, which has low operating noise and high efficiency compared with ordinary PWM mode, which can sufficiently reduce the noise impact on industrial equipment.
