Samsung’s 4nm process has a low yield rate, Qualcomm may transfer some orders to other manufacturers

Posted on: 12/20/2021

On December 6, according to foreign media reports, after 5nm, TSMC and Samsung Electronics’ 4nm process technology has also been mass-produced smoothly. It is reported that Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 mobile processor launched at the end of last month is just a handover. It is foundry by Samsung using 4nm process technology.

However, the latest reports show that the low yield rate of Samsung Electronics’ 4nm process technology has caused Qualcomm’s dissatisfaction. They may hand over some of the foundry orders of high-end Snapdragon processors to other manufacturers to diversify the orders.

According to news from the industry chain, the English media reported that Samsung’s 4nm process yield rate was low, prompting Qualcomm to hand over some orders to other manufacturers.

Although the report did not mention which manufacturer or several manufacturers were handed over, the only manufacturers currently mass-producing the 4nm process are TSMC and Samsung Electronics. If Qualcomm transfers some orders, they will have only TSMC to choose from.

Among the Snapdragon series mobile processors that Qualcomm has already launched, the 4nm process is adopted. Only the Snapdragon 8Gen 1 launched on the 30th of last month, the Snapdragon 888+ 5G and the Snapdragon 780G 5G all use the 5nm process. If Qualcomm diversifies its foundry orders for high-end processors using the 4nm process, it will enable the newly launched Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, or other new Snapdragon products to be launched soon.
