While the industry was initially mum on the popularity of USB-C (technically known as USB Type-C) over the past few years, today’s major consumer electronics design manufacturers have fully embraced the standard. However, when end customers receive the latest USB Type-C devices, they will find accessories and peripherals for such devices lacking in the market.

ON semiconductor‘s USB Type-C solutions help you upgrade your designs and outperform your competitors. In this blog, we will focus on USB Type-C design, basic USB HID (Human Interface Device) such as mouse and keyboard for cell phones and tablets.

With ON semiconductor’s FUSB301 USB Type-C Automation Controller, you can quickly convert any existing device using a USB Standard A or Micro B connector to a USB Type-C connector. In addition, the FUSB301 USB Type-C controller not only makes your device backward compatible, but also enhances the features and functionality of your product.

If your device uses a USB Mini-B or Micro-B receptacle to charge the internal battery, with the FUSB301 USB Type-C controller you can charge faster (when available) for up to 5 V at 3 A Charging, compared to the maximum 2 A charging speed of the old USB Type-C 1.2 standard. For devices that support the USB OTG function, you can configure the FUSB301 as a dual-role port (DRP) to continue to support any features already in your design.

The biggest feature of USB Type-C is the new reversible plug, but if your device supports USB 3.0 data at the same time, this can cause problems because the host needs to know whether the USB 3.0 Tx/Rx pins are on the top or bottom. Our FUSB301 Type-C controllers already include external super switch control pins (like the FUSB340) that can be connected directly to USB SuperSpeed switches to detect, configure and support any USB Type-C features you need.
